Dr Shaw was a lovely man and very kind. Perhaps that resulted from his being a prisoner of war (POW) during WW2 when the British Army which included many Indians, surrendered at Singapore. The treatment meted out to POWs was horrendous and having been treated poorly themselves, they would not be inclined to make others suffer. His background, though, was emphatically that of a Railway Colony which reinforces my assertion that the school I joined was effectively a Railway Colony.
